A CES 2025 Innovation Award-Winning X-Ray: Why the Poskom AirRay-mini Won

A CES 2025 Innovation Award-Winning X-Ray: Why the Poskom AirRay-mini Won

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held every year in Las Vegas, is the event that sets the direction of the technology industry. The CES Innovation Awards are decided by an independent jury on engineering quality, functionality, aesthetics and innovation value.

Among the 2025 winners was a medical device that stood out: the Poskom AirRay-mini — a battery-powered portable X-ray unit weighing 2.9 kilograms.

Two Awards, Not One

The AirRay-mini took two separate awards at CES 2025:

  • Best of InnovationProducts in Support of Human Security for All
  • HonoreeImaging

The official entry is published in the CES awards archive. Winning in the “Human Security for All” category is particularly telling: that category rewards technologies reaching populations without access to healthcare — in other words, the device was recognised for its ability to leave the clinic and go into the field.

Why It Won: Four Decisions Behind the Award

1. Treating weight as an engineering target

Typical weight in the portable X-ray class is 4–7 kg. The AirRay-mini comes in below that band at 2.9 kg (6.4 lb) and is positioned by its manufacturer as the world’s lightest X-ray unit. It measures 249 × 194 × 194 mm — not much larger than a DSLR camera.

What that means in practice: the unit, its folding stand and a wireless detector fit into a single shoulder bag. This is precisely what makes home-care and disaster-site scenarios possible without patient transfer.

2. Automating positioning with a laser distance sensor

The most common cause of retakes in field imaging is an incorrect film-focal distance (FFD). The digital laser distance sensor on the AirRay-mini measures that distance so the operator does not have to estimate it by eye. Fewer retakes means directly lower patient dose and less time on site.

On top of that sits a patient motion alarm: the operator is warned when unwanted movement is detected at the moment of exposure.

3. Using AI where it touches the dose budget

The AI layer here is positioned as a component that affects dose, not as marketing garnish. The manufacturer reports over 50% reduction in noise and scatter, delivering the same diagnostic quality at a lower dose. That matters most in repeated screening programmes and in paediatrics.

4. Preliminary findings within seconds

According to manufacturer data, the system produces a preliminary read across 9 major pulmonary conditions in roughly 3 seconds with over 94% accuracy, and the image can be reviewed on a phone or tablet immediately after exposure.

AI output is intended as clinical decision support. Final diagnosis rests with the physician.

In high-volume occupational health screening, this kind of pre-read is valuable not for making a diagnosis but for triage: it moves the suspicious case to the top of the physician’s list.

Where It Makes Sense

  • Occupational health screening — chest PA on site or inside a mobile occupational health vehicle
  • Home healthcare — imaging bedridden patients without transfer
  • Disaster and emergency response — earthquake sites, tent cities, field hospitals
  • Veterinary field work
  • Maritime and remote-area health services

An Award Is Not, By Itself, a Buying Criterion

The AirRay-mini is a strong device, but a 0.45 kW power class is not right for every job. For routine, high-volume torso and chest imaging the 1.6 kW class Poskom AirRay-20 may fit better, and for extremity-heavy work demanding maximum freedom of movement, the handheld Powersite PSM-HD series.

We collected the full set of decision criteria in our portable X-ray buying guide.
